Exercise 07

07 | Create a transparency using the Ombre Maker.

Objective | To use the 2 color stop ombre to create a transparency effect.

01 | Create an Overlap Design

First we want to create a simple overlapping design using . Once we have a simple design using 3 different color tags, we can then create a transparency.

  1. Create a new rectangular grid quilt.

    • If you need a refresher, visit the tutorial.

  2. To select cell blocks, click on them on the digital design wall. Selected cell blocks will be outlined in blue.

  3. Click on the + sign next on the 1 PATCH BLOCKS tab.

  4. Then click on the Add To Quilt button next to the 1 Patch Block for Color Tag A.

  5. We now have a square that is linked to Color Tag A. Deselect the blocks by clicking on the gray area outside the digital design wall.

  6. Repeat Steps 01.2-5 to create another shape that overlaps the first shape. But this time use the 1 Patch Block for Color Tag C.

  7. Repeat Steps 01.2-5 to create the overlapped shape from the first and second shapes. Use the 1 Patch Block for Color Tag B.

  8. Now we're ready to create a transparency. Don't forget to save your quilt!

02 | Create a Transparency

We're going to use the 2 Color Stop Ombre Maker to create our transparency.

  1. Click on Ombre Maker on the dropdown menu.

  2. The Ombre Maker control panel will slide out.

    • Tip: You can change the default solids library to your preference using the dropdown menu. The default is set to Kona.

  3. Click on Create Ombre on the 2 Color Stop tile.

  4. Another panel will slide in. This is where you set the transparency. A 2 color stop ombre has 2 anchoring color stops with steps in between.

  5. Drag and drop the color tag for our first shape into the STOP 1 box. This is the first anchoring color tag.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag A into the STOP 1 position.

  6. Drag and drop the color tag for our second shape into the STOP 2 box. This is the second anchoring color tag.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag C into the STOP 2 position.

  7. Drag and drop the color tag for our overlapping shape into the STEP 1 box. This will be our transparency color.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag B into the STEP 1 position.

    • Note: Once Color Tag B is dragged into the STEP 1 position, it automatically changes to a color that will create an ombre in relation to both STOP 1 and STOP 2.

  8. We can look at the preview to see what this ombre will look like before committing to it.

  9. If you're happy with the ombre and color tags being used, click on Save and Apply Ombre.

  10. Don't forget to save the quilt!

Click on the COLOR TAGS tab on the .

Click on three dots () next to the Create Color Tag button.

The new ombre is now saved under 'Your Ombres'. To exit, click on the X () in the top right corner of the Ombre Maker panel.

For fun, use the Randomize Color button () to see what fun color transparencies you can create.
