b | Create block variations

Exercise 05b

05b | Create additional Kaleidoscope blocks to customize it.

Objective | To start a new project by using a Starter Quilt as your starting point. You will not have to create the block from scratch.

Did You Know | The Kaleidsocpe quilt creates its circular motion by alternating 2 different blocks. These blocks are labeled Kaleidoscope A and B in the PreQuilt starter quilt. You can decide to keep 2 blocks that alternate or you can add additional blocks that create variations.

01 | Cloning a Kaleidoscope Block

  1. Click on the Clone option.

  2. Now there are 2 of the same Kaleidoscope A block.

    • Tip: You can rename the duplicate block, Kaleidoscope A (2) if it helps keep you organized.

    • Note: The new block has 0x next to it, indicating that it is not used in the quilt grid yet.

02 | Block Variation A: Changing Color

In this variation, we're going to create a variation by only changing the color of part of the Kaleidoscope A block from Color Tag A (Kona Pewter) to Color Tag D (Kona Dragon Fruit).

  • Note: You'll need to add another color tag - Color Tag D.

  1. While holding the shift button, click on all the pieces in the block editor canvas area that use Color Tag B. In this example, I'm going to change the link on the blue pieces from Color Tag C to Color Tag D.

    • Note: These pieces will be faintly outlined in blue when selected.

    • Note: You can also change the color tag one at a time (instead of holding down shift and selecting all the blocks).

  2. Click on the Link button next to Color Tag D.

    • Note: This will change all the pieces that used to be black to Bright Aqua.

  3. Click on Save to Quilt to exit the Block Editor window.

03 | Block Variation B: Relinking Block Pieces

What if we'd like our next block variation to have two different colors instead of just one? To do this, we need to edit the cloned block and link the pieces of the quilt to a different color tag.

In this variation, we're going to create a Kaleidoscope block with two different colors at the corners of the block. We'll make changes this time to a clone of Kaleidoscope B.

  1. Clone another Kaleidoscope B block (see Step 01).

  2. While holding the shift button, click on the white triangle pieces in the block on the block editor canvas.

    • Note: These pieces will be faintly outlined in blue when selected.

    • Note: You can also change the color tag one at a time (instead of holding down shift and selecting all the blocks).

  3. Click on the Link button next to Color Tag D.

    • Note: This will change all the selected pieces that used to be black to Bright Aqua.

  4. Click on Save to Quilt to exit the Block Editor window.
