# 09c | Blocks as Borders

## <mark style="color:blue;">Module 09c | How to Make a Border Out of Blocks</mark>

Sometimes you'll want to create a border out of individual custom blocks.

Building off the knowledge gained in [Module 08b](https://courses.prequilt.com/youtube-courses/intro-to-prequilt-course/09-or-quilt-borders/09b-or-rows-and-columns-as-borders) and [Module 02](https://courses.prequilt.com/youtube-courses/intro-to-prequilt-course/02-or-custom-quilt-blocks/02b-or-create-a-custom-block), this sub-module will teach you how to use individual custom blocks in your border instead of one solid long piece.

### Create the Border

1. Click on the **number 1** on the first row. A little OPTS button will appear to the left the selected row. Click on the **OPTS button** and select **Insert Before** from the dropdown menu.

2. Click on the **OPTS button** and select **Resize** from the dropdown menu.

   <figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2FxWaRBk3uiz5EVjfzICjb%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%203.50.31%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=4327fe12-42af-4ea2-b55d-afc0b96ab33a" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
3. Enter the **number for the height** you'd like the top border to be in the **Resize Row** box and then press the **OK button**.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2Fz1Frgl0JzVIRf0SFr19D%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%203.50.40%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=9ada504f-7988-4084-8aa5-5990e3575127" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
4. **ALERT!** You will notice that there are wider and narrower blocks in this row of border blocks. This is because we have both quilt blocks and sashing. You will need to design custom blocks for each of these border blocks.

   <figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2FWk9R2MNGkYX1UUOS4eML%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%203.51.21%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=41a9902d-9a01-4abf-bf0a-5eacc2cf090d" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

&#x20;&#x20;

### Design & Use Border Blocks

1. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**first block cell**</mark> (the wider block) in Row 1 to select it. <mark style="color:blue;">**Right click**</mark> and select <mark style="color:blue;">**Create Block 12x4**</mark>.&#x20;

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2FrSyEadc080b37VYCmVVB%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%204.47.45%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=684063c0-820b-4163-adb6-f283af587952" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
2. <mark style="color:blue;">**Design a custom block**</mark> of your choosing (see [Module 02](https://courses.prequilt.com/youtube-courses/intro-to-prequilt-course/02-or-custom-quilt-blocks) for a refresher).
3. Once you save your custom block to the quilt, it will automatically be placed on your quilt grid as well as in your BLOCKS tab.

   <figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2FV11zcZmVSieq1onceXSI%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%204.48.29%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=ed6adcb8-62b0-439d-ba27-875434226ab1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
4. Select the <mark style="color:blue;">**remaining empty wide border block cells**</mark> and click the <mark style="color:blue;">**Add to Quilt button**</mark> for your custom block.

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2FHJlO4JrhEUzaK2TLkCUS%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%204.50.06%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=62f1a52a-d10c-4745-95b5-4d4fdf2330a8" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
5. You will see our border partially filled with our border blocks. In this example, I designed a striped block (and rotated it so the stripes alternated the beginning color).

   <figure><img src="https://2632437258-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZIxhpDEaPtVb8DXlSENh%2Fuploads%2F4gzYl1QWLM6GzY2FrYzy%2FScreen%20Shot%202024-05-31%20at%204.48.56%20PM.png?alt=media&#x26;token=84b2782b-4cca-489f-a513-2e69e21d57f1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
6. Click on <mark style="color:blue;">**the second block cell**</mark> (narrow block) in Row 1 to select it. <mark style="color:blue;">**Add the One Patch Block**</mark> of your choice to this narrow block cell - OR - <mark style="color:blue;">**Right click**</mark> and select <mark style="color:blue;">**Create Block 2x4**</mark> and <mark style="color:blue;">**use**</mark> that instead.

7. Repeat step 6 on the remaining narrow border blocks.
