# 05b | HELP! Blocks Keep Changing

## <mark style="color:blue;">Module 05b | Why Both Versions of Your Block Keep Changing</mark>

In this sub-module, I'll explain a commonly occurring mistake that often leads to frustration. If you find that both your original and cloned blocks keep changing together and remain identical, this sub-module will be helpful for fixing it!

**TIP:** Do NOT change the fabric being used by a Fabric Link. Instead, **LINK** a new Fabric Link.

## <mark style="color:blue;">WHY?!? An Explanation</mark>

After cloning an original block, the most common instinct is to edit the Fabric Link's fabric, for example Fabric Link A. In this example, Fabric Link A has changed from Kona Sprout to Kona Hyacinth.

<div><figure><img src="/files/yj84reFUFy6oi8Q3XsZv" alt=""><figcaption><p>Cloned block using Fabric Link A in background</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="/files/326xHqkTrQ2SeFrVNaZE" alt=""><figcaption><p>Cloned block still using Fabric Link A in background</p></figcaption></figure></div>

But since, both blocks have pieces that are linked to Fabric Link A, they will both change (and remain identical).&#x20;

## <mark style="color:blue;">Help Guide</mark>

The way to create a unique block from a cloned original is to **link** a different Fabric Link to your block pieces.

1. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Edit Block**</mark> button for the newly cloned block '*Sawtooth Star (2)*'

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/gMUlZy6TSWHi8djlLD5v" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
2. The Block Editor panel will slide out. To create a new, unique quilt block, you will need to make a fundamental change to the cloned block so that it is no longer identical to its original.&#x20;
   * In this example, I'm changing all the background block pieces from Fabric Link A to Fabric Link C.
3. Click on <mark style="color:blue;">**any background piece of the block,**</mark> <mark style="color:blue;">**right click**</mark> on the mouse and then select the <mark style="color:blue;">**SELECT ALL option**</mark> from the dropdown menu.&#x20;

   <div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/RQYQKuPEr4Ht2uBgzQoy" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
4. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Link button**</mark> (<img src="/files/B6WTsBFGvoKPnnoN04tw" alt="" data-size="line">) for the fabric link (Fabric Link C) you'd like to use for these block pieces.

5. You will now see that the background for our new Sawtooth Star is now Kona Bright Pink.

6. Click on the <mark style="color:blue;">**Save to Quilt button**</mark> in the upper right corner of the Block Editor.

7. You will now see our new and unique block variation of the Sawtooth Star.
