Sometimes your quilt blocks might just be too close to one another and you want to add sashing to separate them.
In this sub-module, you'll learn how to add columns and rows between your blocks to create sashing with cornerstones.
PreQuilt's usability is inspired by spreadsheets, so if you know how to add a row or column in Excel, it'll be easy for you to pick this up!
NOTE: Dimensions are always in finished sizes and in inches.
On the quilt grid, highlight an entire column of blocks by clicking on the number at the top of the column. In this example, I've selected column 2.
A little OPTS button will appear above the selected column.
Click on the OPTS button and select Insert Before from the dropdown menu.
Click on the OPTS button again and select Insert After from the dropdown menu.
Repeat steps 1-4 as needed so that there is a new and empty column between each column of blocks in your quilt.
Now select all of the new and empty columns by clicking on the number at the top of each column. In this example, I've selected columns 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
Click on any of the OPTS button and select Resize from the dropdown menu.
Enter the width of sashing you'd like in the Resize Column box and then press the OK button.
In this example, I want the width of my vertical sashing to be 2 inches, so I've entered the number 2.
Since all the empty columns were selected, the resizing has happened to all selected columns at once time. You will now see empty, narrow columns between each column of blocks, which is where our vertical sashing will be placed.
On the quilt grid, highlight an entire row of blocks by clicking on the number to the left of the row. In this example, I've selected column 2.
A little OPTS button will appear to the left the selected row.
Click on the OPTS button and select Insert Before from the dropdown menu.
Click on the OPTS button again and select Insert After from the dropdown menu.
Repeat steps 1-4 as needed so that there is a new and empty row between each row of blocks in your quilt.
Now select all of the new and empty rows by clicking on the number to the left of each row. In this example, I've selected rows 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
Click on the OPTS button and select Resize from the dropdown menu.
Enter the width of sashing you'd like in the Resize Column box and then press the OK button.
In this example, I want the width of my vertical sashing to be 2 inches, so I've entered the number 2.
You will now see empty, narrow rows between each row of blocks, which is where our horizontal sashing will be placed.
You can also see that there are small squares where the vertical and horizontal sashing intersect. These are our cornerstones.
Now that we have the placeholders for our vertical sashing, horizontal sashing, and cornerstones, we can now fill those placeholders with our fabric selections.
Click on the BLOCKS tab on the left side control panel.
Click on the + sign to expand the One Patch Blocks panel.
You will now see a One Patch Block option for each of our fabric links.
Click on all the vertical sashing block cells in row 1 to select them.
Click on the Add to Quilt button for the Fabric Link A One Patch Block.
You will now see that Fabric Link A is now our vertical sashing for row 1.
Click on all the horizontal sashing block cells in row 2 to select them.
Click on the Add to Quilt button for the Fabric Link A One Patch Block.
You will now see that Fabric Link A is now our horizontal sashing for row 2.
Click on all the cornerstone block cells in row 2 to select them.
Click on the Add to Quilt button for the Fabric Link D One Patch Block.
You will now see that Fabric Link D is now our cornerstones for row 2.
To have to repeat these steps over and over would be really cumbersome. So, here's an easy way to fill out the sashing for all the remaining rows.
Click on the block cells for all sashing and cornerstones in rows 1 and 2.
Click on the first sashing block cell in row 4.
Click on the Copy/Paste button on the central, vertical toolbar and select Paste.
Repeat steps 3-4 for rows 6, 8 and 10.
For row 11, select all the empty vertical sashing block cells and add Fabric Link A One Patch Blocks to them.
Now you will your completed quilt with blocks, sashing, and cornerstones.
Click on the Copy/Paste button () on the central, vertical toolbar and select Copy.
