b | One color stop ombre

Exercise 06b

06b | Create a one color stop ombre on a Log Cabin block.

Objective | To use the PreQuilt Ombre Maker to create log cabin blocks with two different 1 Color Stops and to be able to edit the color tag inside the Ombre Maker.

01 | Create a 1 Color Stop Ombre (Top Left Half)

First we're going to create a 1 Color Stop on one half of our Log Cabin block. For this example, I'll do this on the top left half of the log cabin block.

  1. Click on Ombre Maker on the dropdown menu.

  2. The Ombre Maker control panel will slide out.

    • Tip: You can change the default solids library to your preference using the dropdown menu. The default is set to Kona.

  3. Click on Create Ombre on the 1 Color Stop tile.

  4. Another panel will slide in. This is where you set the ombre.

  5. Click on the down arrow next to the word Brighten. A dropdown menu will open.

    • Choose one:

      • Brighten -- Creates an ombre that will transition from darkest to lightest OR

      • Darken -- Creates an ombre that transitions from lightest to darkest OR

      • Auto-detect -- Choices for you based on STEP 1 color

  6. Drag and drop the starting color tag into the STOP 1 box. This starting color tag will be the dominant color tag that the other color tags will follow in steps.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag A into the STOP 1 position. Color Tag A is used on the top left side of the log cabin and is farthest outside log pieces.

  7. Click on the checkbox to preview what these changes will look like before committing to these changes.

  8. Next drag and drop the color tag that will be a step away from the dominant color.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag B (bright green) into the STEP 1 position. Color Tag B is used on the top left side of the log cabin and is the second furthest from the center square.

    • Note: Once Color Tag B is dragged into the STEP 1 position, it automatically changes to a color that will start creating the ombre by lightening the color in relation to STEP 1.

  9. Repeat Steps 01.10 until all the remaining color tags linked to the top left log cabin pieces have been added to the ombre lineup.

    • In this example, that will include Color Tag C and Color Tag D.

    • Note: Once Color Tag C and Color Tag D have been added to the ombre steps, they will automatically change to the conform to the ombre.

  10. We can look at the preview to see what this ombre will look like before committing to it.

    • Note: Only one half of the log cabin block has an ombre.

  11. If you're happy with the ombre and color tags being used, click on Save and Apply Ombre.

    • In this example, the anchor is Color Tag A.

  12. Don't forget to save the quilt!

02 | Create Another 1 Color Stop Ombre (Bottom Right Half)

Now that we have one half of our log cabin block ombred, we can either keep the block as it is, or we can create another ombre on the second half of the block. Let's do that here.

  1. Click on Ombre Maker on the dropdown menu.

  2. The Ombre Maker control panel will slide out.

    • Note: We'll see our previous Ombre here.

      • Auto-detect -- Choices for you based on STEP 1 color.

  6. Drag and drop the starting color tag into the STOP 1 box. This starting color tag will be the dominant color tag that the other color tags will follow in steps.

    • In this example, I'm going to drag Color Tag F into the STOP 1 position. Color Tag F is used on the bottom right side of the log cabin and is closest to the center square.

  7. Click on the checkbox to preview what these changes will look like before committing to these changes.

  8. Repeat Steps 02.8 until all the remaining color tags linked to the top left log cabin pieces have been added to the ombre lineup.

  9. We can look at the preview to see what this ombre will look like before committing to it.

  10. Click on the Save and Apply Ombre button.

  11. While I like the pastel ombres that have been created, I wonder what it would look like with a bit more contrast. So, I'm going to create another colorway and edit the anchor color tag.

03 | Create a Colorway

Before we make any changes to the ombre though, let's create a separate colorway so we can compare the current ombre with the one one we'll create.

  1. Click on the COLOR TAG tab on the left side control panel.

  2. Click on the down arrow next to Original Colorway to activate the dropdown menu.

  3. Click on Clone Existing Colorway.

  4. Name your colorway and click on Save.

04 | Changing Color Tags Inside Ombre Maker

Now that we have our second colorway, we can now go and make changes to the ombre with the knowledge that we have saved our original colorway.

  1. Click on Ombre Maker on the dropdown menu.

  2. The Ombre Maker control panel will slide out.

    • Note: We'll see our previous Ombres here.

  3. Click on the Edit button on the Ombre we want to change.

  4. A panel specific to this Ombre will slide out.

  5. The color swatch library panel will slide out. We can now link a new solid color swatch to Color Tag F.

  6. Click on the solid color swatch you'd like to use. In this example, I'm going to use Kona Water. The panel will close once you edit the color tag.

  7. The preview of the new ombre will now automatically update.

  8. If you like it, click on the Save and Apply Ombre button.

  9. Don't forget to save your quilt!

05 | Toggle Colorways

Now that we have two different colorways, we can easily compare them by toggling.

  1. Click on the COLOR TAG tab on the left side control panel.
